FINLAND and LAPLAND ... in a VW Camper is now available. The book follows our five months of travels throughout the length and breadth of Finland and Finnish Lapland.

This 6,000 miles journey of exploration in our VW Camper begins in the Bothnian Gulf Åland Islands Archipelago. From there we spend time in Finland's capital city Helsinki, our favourite of European capitals, and visit the national Parliament, the Eduskunta.

From the Russian border at Vaalimaa, we travel northwards following the Via Karelia, to explore Finnish Lakeland, North Karelia and the forests of Kainuu, through Finnish Lapland to the Norwegian border. From the far north-west at Kilpisjärvi, we turn south though Rovanniemi, Oulu, across to Kajaani, through Central Finland to Jyväskylä and Tampere. Out to the west coast at Pori and Vaasa, we finally finish at the south-western port-city of Turku.

These detailed travelogues give insightful coverage and analysis of our journey: the places we visited, the sights we witnessed, the wildlife we studied and photographed, and the people we met.

The work is fully illustrated with over 600 colour photographs, and is fully mapped enabling the reader to accompany us on our travels in a meaningful way.

The book also includes detailed coverage of Finland's history from its earliest settlement, its northward expansion under the Swedish Empire, its 19th century rule by Tsarist Russia as the Grand Duchy of Finland, finally achieving independence in 1917. Having twice withstood Russian invasion in 1939~44 during WW2, Finland is now a prosperous EU sovereign republic, and since 2023 a member of NATO.

The resultant book is now published as a 500 page, A4 sized paperback (see right for front cover), forming a comprehensive guide and reference book for Finland and Finnish Lapland.
