  • location and setting
  • standard of facilities
  • price and value for money

340 NOK

UNDULY EXPENSIVE

For a capital city site, this is one of best: super helpful reception staff, pleasant grassy, wooded setting, reasonable facilities, good bus service into city, supermarket next door BUT spoilt by exorbitant price
Welcome: ultra-helpful and smilingly hospitable welcome from reception staff - city-plan, bus details and tickets - everything you need for city visit
Setting: 9kms from city centre in wooded suburbs; large site doubtless busy in summer; delightfully green setting with flat, grassy pitches
Facilities: WC/showers much in need of renovation, overused and under-cared for; showers cost 15NOK for 4 minutes; basic and poorly equipped kitchen/wash-up; #32 bus for city centre passes campsite every 15 minutes, but tickets in advance 15 NOK seniors per journey from reception; Kiwi supermarket next door
Price: an otherwise good site is let down by its extortionate price of 340 NOK/night inc showers @ 15 NOK each; most expensive site of trip

(inc showers at 30 NOK)

UNDULY EXPENSIVE

An enormous and soulless site with many statics, on riverside 15km north of Lillehammer
Welcome: out of season campsite reception closed; book in at Hunderfossen Hotel 300m up lane - perfunctory welcome
Setting:
huge site with many statics set on flat riverside terrace close to Hunderfoss Family Park 'adventure centre' (yuk!); quiet in early May but would be heaving bedlam in mid-summer; campsite next to main railway line but with little noise of passing trains; more noise from traffic on busy E6 across river
Facilities: heated WC/showers modern and clean, but showers charged extra at extortionate 30 NOK each; partially equipped kitchen/wash-up; wi-fi included in price but only at hotel reception

Price: basic out-of-season price 220 NOK but showers at 30 NOK make total nightly charge 280 NOK; unduly expensive and poor value

250 NOK

Enormous holiday-camp jam-packed full of wall-to-wall luxy, monster statics
Welcome: pleasantly smiling welcome from owners
Setting: set on shore of Lake Mjøsa 8kms south of Lillehammer, but totally overcrowded with statics, creating a desolate environment; even the separate area supposedly reserved for visitors now being encroached on by increasing numbers of holiday-making statics, leaving just a small but secluded area down by lake-shore; tolerable in early May, but in summer the place would be utter bedlam
Facilities: modern, clean WC/showers, but extra cost for card-operated techno-showers which did not work; modern kitchen/wash-up; site-wide wi-fi included in price
Price: 250 NOK inc 2x10 NOK for showers

274 NOK Long-established family-operated and hospitable site on shore of Lake Strondafjord at Fagernes
Welcome: ultra-helpful welcome from reception staff; reception closed out-of-season but telephone and she will come over
Setting: first impression suggests crowded with statics, but at far end a separate lake-side area terraced into pine-covered hill-side reserved for visitors; web site promotes the importance of visitors and they achieve this without intrusion of statics
Facilities: 2 service buildings, 2nd more modern and superbly equipped with luxurious individual shower/washrooms; well-equipped kitchen/wash-up with beautifully furnished common/dining room; inc site-wide wi-fi with full strength signal; washing/drying machine (extra cost); 500m walk into Fagernes centre around lake-shore with supermarkets and excellent TIC
Price: only downside is price - expensive at 250 +2x12 NOK for showers - total 274 NOK, but otherwise excellent site

This lovely, welcoming jewel of a campsite fully deserves the description One of Norway's best value and friendliest campsites given Lonely Planet
Welcome:
Bjørkhol is certainly one of the most hospitable campsites we have ever stayed at in 45 years of camping, with an effusively friendly and helpful welcome from the owners Anna-Ma and Terje Hoelsbrekken
Setting:
idyllically green setting in flat bottom of upper Gudbrandsdal valley, 6kms south of Dombås; large, flat and grassy camping areas surrounded by birches and backed by wooded hill-side, with far side of valley enclosed by snow-covered fells; sufficiently distant from E6 for traffic noise not to be intrusive
Facilities:
straightforward but spotlessly clean WC/showers and small kitchen/wash-up/common room; showers 5 NOK and wash-up hot water 1 NOK; washing machine good value 30 NOK with heated drying room; wi-fi being installed
Price:
best value site of the trip - 202 NOK inc coins for showers and washing-up hot water
With such a memorably happy stay, campsites simply do not come better than this - GO THERE!

18 May 250  NOK Fell-land campsite high above E6 facing across to Dovrefjell
Welcome: unsmiling. ill-gracious and perfunctory non-welcome from owner - what a stark contrast with the warm welcome at Bjøkhol
Setting: 700m up dirt track high on fell-side above E6 with magnificent views looking across to Dovrefjell mountains; segregated area crammed full of statics and huts, with small. grubby and sloping camping area for visitors
Facilities: unspectacular but functional WC/showers and small kitchen/wash-up but everything needed extra coins inc an outrageous 10 NOK (£1) for washing-up hot water (do as we did and take hot water from WHBs!), all adding to cumulative high price; semi-functioning wi-fi, totally unreliable and unusable

200 NOK 'Mixed bag' campsite with some good, some very bad features, but convenient for visit to lovely city of Trondheim
Welcome: friendly and helpful welcome from owner and family; responded promptly to pre-trip email enquiry about bus details, and agreed price reduction after complaints about noise
Setting: sordidly unkempt camping areas, overcrowded with grubby static caravans occupied by migrant workers and dubious characters with inconsiderate, rowdy and drunken behaviour; little space or spare power points left for visitors; a fetidly unpleasant environment, overwhelmed with noise from passing trains, planes and revving car engines, building works, and noisy occupants
Facilities:
modern set of 6 integrated bathrooms kept scrupulously clean by resident caretaker Eva, a delightful Hungarian lady who took pride in her work and with helping guests with information; basic care-worn kitchen/wash-up; facilities abused by long-term residents despite Eva's efforts to maintain cleanliness; site-wide wi-fi; regular half-hourly bus service (#38) to/from Trondheim - pay driver - 25 NOK seniors' (
honnør) ticket; supermarkets 1 km at Vikhammer
Price: normal price 240 NOK all-in, but in view of unacceptable behaviour and noise from long-term residents, owner agreed price reduction to 200 NOK/night

3 June 195 NOK Despite glorious mountain setting overlooking Gimsøystraumen, this is a miserable campsite, with 2nd rate facilities, and polluted by noise from camping-cars (bobil) packed in rows full of rowdy, inconsiderate folk, and overwhelming traffic noise from E10
Welcome: reasonable welcome from reception staff
Setting: spectacular setting with towering Lyngværfjell above, overlooking Gimsøystraumen and backed by mountains of
Gimsøya and Vestvågøya; but camping area poorly terraced on steeply sloping hillside, and severely polluted by noise from massed ranks of camping-cars and marginally less objectionable traffic noise from E10 immediately above; flatter upper terrace but none of electric outlets there were functioning
Facilities: superficially clean, but no hot water in wash-up, minimally equipped kitchen, and showers luke-warm despite 10 NOK coins; complaints resulted in refund of shower charges; alleged wi-fi totally dysfunctional with no internet access; nearest supermarket 12 kms in Svolvær

UNDULY EXPENSIVE
with all cumulative extras

Family-run, large but straightforward shore-side site on isolated north coast of Moskenesøya, but with all the cumulative charges adding up to making it one of most expensive sites of the trip, giving the place a mean and penny-pinching air
Welcome: an initial friendly welcome from owner's wife turned to offensive rudeness when we later commented on cumulative cost of all the extras which most campsites include in basic price
Setting: vast, featureless camping area surrounded by dunes alongside white-sand beach on northern shore of
Moskenesøya with clear view of Midnight Sun over sea and islets
Facilities:
basic facilities with WC/showers in need of upgrading; but campsite's major downside is the additional costs for all the basic features which other campsite's include in price, the most offensive was coins needed for basic kitchenette's electric rings and charge for wi-fi
Price: basic charge 200 NOK - plus 30 NOK for power, 2x10 NOK for showers, 20 NOK for wi-fi, 10 NOK kitchen, accumulating to a whopping 280 NOK; for a straightforward site this was unacceptable, compounded by the wife's offensive manner when challenged on this

215 NOK A disappointingly inadequate site, despite the impressive setting overshadowed by towering mountains on north coast of Flakstadøya
Welcome: earlier we had received an encouraging welcome to our initial enquiry, but reception unmanned when we arrived
Setting: camping area set among broad, open expanse of dunes by white-sand beach on north coast of
Flakstadøya close to Flakstad church, overshadowed by towering cliffs of island's northern mountains; but minimal flat ground among hummocky dunes; if sun ever shines, clear horizon across sea for Midnight Sun
Facilities: absolutely minimal - 2 unisex WC/showers with little privacy; for large campsite, this inevitably meant queues; empty toilet-roll holders not replenished and non-working hand-driers; wash-up sink, electric rings, table and chairs, industrial washing /drying machines all shoe-horned into tiny cupboard constituted the minimalist kitchenette; no wi-fi
Price: 215 NOK inc 2x10 NOK for miserly 3 min showers

A failing campsite with minimal facilities, up for sale and in state of terminal dereliction, but still charging 240 NOK/night; having said that, a good Midnight Sun setting on north coast of Austvågøya
Welcome: perfunctory welcome from lady-owner
Setting: set in isolated farming/fishing village of
Laukvik in remote NW corner of Austvågøya; camping areas spread along linear driveway leading down to coast, but totally overgrown, neglected and un-cared for, in state of terminal decline; minimal electric outlets, and 1 very dubious extension cable stretching to far end
Facilities: run-down, old-fashioned WC/showers and basic kitchenette/wash-up, all in basement of reception house, 500m from far end of camping area by coast where you would want to camp; supplementary facilities building non-functional - froze up last winter and not repaired, another indication of terminal decline; NO wi-fi (owner admitted she had not bothered to renew because of cost; nearest shop in Laukvik village but that also for sale and likely to close
Price: in spite of site's run-down state, owner is still charging an unrealistically expensive rate of 240 NOK inc 2x20 NOK for showers
Having said all that, why choose to stay at such a derelict, over-expensive site? Answer - peaceful shore-side setting provides perfect location for watching Midnight Sun across sea on clear night

Welcome: officious, unwelcoming and unhelpful attitude from reception staff; it's the sort of place where you're expected to apologise for being a paying guest; the place is clearly run for the convenience of staff and customer service standards leave much to be desired

230 NOK A minimalist campsite charging full-scale prices, kept by English owner and Hinnøya-born wife; despite their web site claims about 'back-to-nature' environment (Friluftsenter = outdoors), it is in fact a very basic, poorly-equipped and unkempt fell-land site with basic facilities, an afterthought to an ultra expensive restaurant
Welcome: perfunctory welcome from reception staff with long-winded, bureaucratic rigmarole for booking-in (unprecedented in Norway); questioning the absence of campers' kitchen despite the full-scale price of 230 NOK simply produced indifferent shrug in response
Setting: set high on fell-side looking out over Ris
øy-Sound to hills of southern Andøya, a glorious outlook; but small and unkempt camping area with minimal power supplies and large area of untidy statics
Facilities: tiny, cramped and minimalist facilities hut with 2 x WC/showers and wash-up sink; said to be newly upgraded, but if so, heaven knows what the old one was like! no cooking or laundry facilities; pretentious, very expensive restaurant seems to be core business, with campsite as an after-thought

Welcome: pleasantly helpful welcome from owner, but that's where the positive features end!
Setting: remote setting on high fell-land alongside E39 Trondheim~Kistiansund road; first impressions count here - the place seemed crammed with statics, the gravelled visitors' camping area sloped steeply in every direction so as to be virtually unusable; and to cap it all noise of digger as owner excavated rocks made for  totally disturbed evening
Facilities: limited and old-fashioned but clean WC/showers; small, basic kitchen/wash-up; washing machine (extra cost) with large drying room; inc wi-fi just about reaching camping area but weak signal; nearest shops 20kms in Orkanger

Don't be fooled by the glitzy website! Set in northern outskirts of city close to Atlantic Tunnel entrance at start of Atlantic Road; the motel may be smart but the campsite certainly is NOT! it's a disgrace to the city of Kristiansund, with worst facilities and most noise polluted site in Norway
Welcome: the very pleasant and helpful welcome and hospitable manner from young receptionist save this place from getting an even lower rating; she was its only saving grace
Setting and facilities: large motel and complex of huts leading to what should have been pleasant camping areas, but all badly run-down and neglected in much need of upgrading care and attention; some electric outlets not working, larger service house now closed leaving woefully lacking service hut; several of WCs non-functioning and only 2 showers, leading to permanent queues with large and busy site; 1 outdoor wash-up sink and an electric ring make up the so-called kitchen; but even worse is the constant 24 hour penetrating noise from ventilation system which pollutes the whole site, making pitches close to service hut unusable; pitches away from this noise are infested with building site noise; inc wi-fi but limited to reception
Price:
even at all-inclusive 200 NOK, this is poor value for what is a largely unusable site with inadequate and run-down facilities and excessive noise levels; it was so bad that we refused to pay for the 2nd night!
Having said that, it is only site within walking distance of Kristiansund; all the more reason to smarten up its act, without raising prices to unacceptable levels; but until then, use alternative site of Byskogen Camping 4kms from centre out near airport (qv)
Kristiansund is an interesting city and certainly worth a visit, with natural harbour set between its 3 islands; be sure to use harbour ferries (Sundbåt); fascinating history of dried, salted cod (klippfisk)

UNDULY EXPENSIVE FOR A VERY BASIC SITE

A very basic site with primitive facilities and unduly expensive prices
Welcome: apparently welcoming owner until it came to paying; he charged 250 NOK despite his web site price was 195 NOK which he claimed was out of date
Setting: set on former farm looking out across fjord against mountainous backdrop, just outside furniture-making town of
Sykkylven; small, flat, grassy camping area terraced into slope but with only one power outlet
Facilities: primitively basic WC/showers (showers are a luke warm dribble!) much in need of upgrading; basic wash-up sink under draughty covered way; no kitchen other than one electric ring for which 20 NOK was charged; inc wi-fi just about reaching camping area but very weak signal
Price: at time of our visit, web site price given as 195 NOK inc 10 NOK coins for showers; in fact owner charged
245 alleging that web site was out of date; it now shows 250 NOK plus 2x10 NOK showers coins, an outrageously silly price for such a basic site

This has to be without doubt THE finest campsite in Norway: wonderful mountain location, first class, thoughtfully laid-out facilities, excellent value price, and above all the superbly hospitable welcome from owner Astrid and her mother
See Josterdal Camping's Guest Book for the many commendations from other guests
Welcome: wonderfully hospitable welcome from Astrid, a charmingly gentile lady with ready smile and warm personality, and her mother who with her husband founded the campsite in 1974; Astrid is widely travelled and experienced mountaineer with good appreciation of campers' needs which she has put to good use in designing the newly enlarged facilities building; hospitality does not come better than this
Setting: campsite set within a loop of Josterdøla River which flows down from Nigardsbreen Glacier, enclosed by levée and surrounded by high mountains, at Gjerde village at head of Josterdalen; excellent, wide, flat, grassy camping area with plenty of space for tents and power outlets for campers, with well-used huts among the birches
Facilities: recently enlarged and well designed facilities building with excellent WC/showers, well-equipped kitchen/wash-up, and large common room; inc site-wide wi-fi; washing/drying machines (extra cost); well-stocked mini-market in Gjerde village 5 mins walk

260 NOK Tiny, straightforward and peaceful site attached to café/goats cheese shop by ferry-quay at remote fjord-side hamlet of Undredal; 6 kms down steep and high-sided mountain valley of Undredal on southern shore of Aulands Fjord; the campsite is run by the community and the quay-side café
Welcome: friendly and helpful welcome from owner
Setting: small camping area looks directly down onto the ferry landing-stage and across Aulands Fjord, overshadowed by sheer-sided mountains all round, an awe-inspiring location
Facilities: facilities provided by Undredal Community in their Gjestestova (Visitor Centre) neighbouring onto the camping area; clean, modern WC/showers; wash-up with hot water but NO kitchen; washing machine (extra cost); inc wi-fi on c
afé terrace opposite; local goats cheese tasting and sale at café
Price: 260 NOK inc 2x10 NOK coins for showers; slightly expensive but worth it for a stay in this admirable community who have worked hard to protect their village's identity from the scourge of mass tourism that has ruined Flåm, and developed their own community-based distinctive local tourism
Until 1988, the only access to the tiny isolated hamlet of Undredal was by ferry across Aulands Fjord which still calls regularly; when the Gudvangen Tunnel opened connecting Gudvangen with Flåm in 1991, the narrow single-track lane leading steeply down into Undredal was constructed giving the village its first road link; Undredal folk have traditionally made their living from producing and exporting goats cheese
Be sure to see the tiny wooden stave-church up on hill-side with its rustic wall-paintings; if locked, arrange visit through c
afé

210 NOK Trim little straightforward, family-run site in magnificent setting of Nærøydalen surrounded by over-towering mountain walls
Welcome: pleasant welcome from owner
Setting: beautiful location in narrow Nærøydalen, surrounded by 1,500m high towering cliffs and waterfalls of mountain walls enclosing the valley; traditional turf-roofed log cabins and flat, grassy camping area; but overwhelmed by traffic noise from busy adjacent E16 highway along valley
Facilities: straightforward WC/showers but bright, cheery and spotlessly clean; small wash-up but NO kitchen; inc site-wide wi-fi with strong signal; washing/drying machines (extra cost); no shops nearby
Price: good value at 210 NOK inc 2x10 NOK coins for showers
Lovely site in wonderful location; pity about traffic noise

260 NOK

EXPENSIVE

Second rate, expensive campsite with dysfunctional facilities and overwhelmed by traffic noise from adjacent Route 580
Welcome: helpful welcome from owners who provided city plans and public transport details for Bergen visit
Setting: located 15kms to south of Bergen, immediately alongside Route 580 very busy with commuter traffic and heavy trucks, with appalling levels of traffic noise - if you're a light sleeper this is not the place to stay! lot of effort put into creating bays in gravelled camping areas but totally ill-conceived - too small even for our small campervan with risk of bumping doors on raised side walls; the least unattractive of the camping areas is closest to road and traffic noise; local traffic to industrial estate passes through site adding to traffic noise; sloping and uneven surface makes levelling impossible; all in all pretty hopeless!
Facilities:  reasonable kitchen/wash-up, but ill-designed and dysfunctional WC/showers; inc wi-fi but weak signal; washing machine (extra cost); most useful feature was ease of public transport into Bergen - #90 bus outside campsite to Nesttun then Bergen Light Railway into centre (Remember to ask for half-price senior/honnør tickets)
Price: 260 NOK inc 2x10 NOK coins for showers
Bergen is least interesting of Norwegian cities - over-rated, over-whelmed with tourists, over-commercialised and over-priced

250 NOK A beautifully located site BUT with the rudest, most offensively ill-mannered owners ever encountered in 45 years of camping - which is saying something!
Welcome: the most comically offensive non-welcome ever experienced from both the owner and his wife; their behaviour towards guests makes Basil and Sybil Fawlty (John Cleese and Prunella Scales) of the 1970s TV series Fawlty Towers seem acceptably normal!! they both need reminding that to treat paying guests in such an offensive manner is a certain recipe for commercial failure
Setting: gravelled camping area set on terrace overlooking Langenuen Sound on east coast of Stord Island, a beautiful location but overwhelmed by traffic noise from adjacent E39, - with constant roar of traffic sounding like aircraft engines
Facilities:
basic, old-fashioned WC/showers and wash-up; inc wi-fi but signal so weak as to be unusable; washing/drying machines (extra cost)
Price: all-inclusive 250 NOK

270 NOK

UNDULY EXPENSIVE

Second rate campsite, unduly expensive, with petty, officious and unhelpful owners, and poorly designed, dysfunctional facilities
Welcome: apparently welcoming greeting in fact masked officious, petty and unhelpful attitudes from owners; unconcerned about not providing city maps for Stavanger
Setting: located near Sandes 12kms south of Stavanger; broad, but sloping camping grassy camping area which tends to get water-logged in heavy rain; with formally marked-out pitches, this is another site to allocate a numbered pitch meaning a return to reception to change it
Facilities: totally ill-designed and dysfunctional: main problem was having to use card-key for facilities, which of course you forgot; 2nd problem was that 30 NOK deposit charged for each key; 3rd problem was attitudinal - you can only have 2nd key if you pay another deposit! 4th problem - WC/showers were totally dysfunctional,  long, narrow cubicle with WC at 1 end and loo-roll out of arm's reach at far end, and WHB with wide over-shelf so positioned to bang your head when cleaning teeth; all very unacceptable! wi-fi internet but charged at extra 20 NOK for 24 hours; no nearby buses into Stavanger
Price: poor value at unduly expensive 270 NOK - basic price 220 NOK + 2x15 NOK for showers + 20 NOK for wi-fi
With all of this, and with Mosvangen NAF Camping in Stavanger even more outrageously priced, Stavanger is scarcely worth a visit

225 NOK A good, functional campsite in pleasant location by fast-flowing river; some traffic noise but excellent facilities
Welcome: gruff, rather perfunctory welcome from glum-faced lady at reception
Setting: road-side setting in outskirts of small port-industrial town of Egersund; camping area laid out in rows alongside huts which lined the fast-flowing salmon fishing river whose pleasant sound helped to mask out traffic noise; part-grassed/part-gravelled pitches slightly sloping
Facilities: first class facilities which set a standard other campsites should follow: 8 integrated bathrooms (WC-shower-WHB - no coins!), each thoughtfully laid out - designer clearly had ready understanding of campers' needs: plenty of hooks for clothes and wash-bag, additional hook by shower for towel, good-sized over-shelf at WHB but set to 1 side to avoid bumping head; stool to sit on for drying feet; ultra luxurious loo-roll and paper hand towels; all you could ask for, spotlessly clean and  delight to use!; older kitchen/wash-up, ? next on upgrading list; inc site-wide wi-fi with strong signal; washing/drying machines (extra cost); supermarkets in Egersund 3kms
Price: excellent value at all-inclusive 225 NOK, with no hidden extras
