Natural
hot springs: there are spa towns and natural sources of
geothermally heated water throughout the Pyrenees. We found these 'sources
sauvages' in the hills above our campsite at Fontpédrouse,
with water almost too hot to touch welling up from the hillside |

le
Petit Train Jaune: the 1 metre gauge rail line travels
through the most spectacular parts of the upper Têt
valley. Electrically driven (850v third rail - supplied by locally
generated HEP), the trains are painted in the Catalan national colours of
yellow and red |

Les
Orgues: we visited this natural phenomenon because we were
camped nearby and Rough Guide mentioned it; in fact it was just amazing -
like watching erosion as it happened, so soft were the sedimentary
deposits |

Col d'Ares: a
preview of next week's travels. The Tech valley gives access to this
mid-level Pyrenean pass into Spain, a major escape route for Spanish
Republican refugees fleeing Franco's regime in 1939, and for escapees from
occupied France during WW II |
