Andorra
la Vella: Andorra's reputation is of being the rather
sordid bargain basement of Europe. But there are more attractive aspects
to the Principality, if you get away from the tourist trail. We found this
superb paella lunch in Andorra la Vella's old quarter |

Prehistoric
cave painting at Niaux: paintings of bison, ibex, horses
and stags, created over 12,000 years ago by lamplight in the cave's inner
recesses, by Cro-Magnon Magdalenian hunter-gathers, Homo sapiens like
ourselves. The paintings rival more recent works of art for their delicate
beauty |

Foix
market: regular visitors to our travelling web site will
know of our love for wandering among the stalls of the local market. Foix
has been holding its twice weekly market since being granted the privilege
by the Counts of Foix in 13th century. If the shopping was as good then,
Foix's citizens lived well |

Montsegur
Cathar Castle: the castle is set on the pinnacle of a 1200m
high mountain, although little remains but the donjon and enceinte walls.
It was the scene of the brutal murder of
over 200 Cathars, by the Catholic church trying to rid itself of a
peaceful sect who were prepared to suffer martyrdom for their beliefs. |
