Feu
de St Jean at St Lizier: many Pyrenean and Catalan villages
still celebrate the Feast of St John the Baptist (or is it pre-Christian
Midsummer's Eve?) with bonfires and merrymaking. The bonfire at St Lizier
lights up the nearby 12th century Romanesque cathedral |

Cirque
de Cagateille: less spectacular than Gavarnie, but at least
you can enjoy its splendours almost in solitude. And the alpine flora
within the cwm was just breath-taking. Here we found at least 5 varieties
of wild orchid and, at last the famous Pyrenean Lily |

Cascade
d' Ars: the weather was far from perfect, and we got
another soaking from a mountain electrical storm on the descent, but the
spectacular falls made it worthwhile. Despite the relatively easy access,
we scarcely saw another soul the whole day |

Cirque
de Gavarnie: if this picture seems familiar; it was taken
at virtually the same location as the 1973 photo published on our Pyrenees
Prologue web site. You can see the full sweep of the Cirque and the 423m
high Grand Cascade on the left wall of the cwm |
