Departing
Southampton docks: the web site would not be complete without the
traditional 'Sheila at ship's rail' photo. We think the date was 16
September 1973, and judging by the wind, it must have been a pretty rough
Channel crossing |

Shopping
for lunch: we naturally took full advantage of shopping for
lunch in the market of towns through which we passed. In 1973, there were
few if any autoroutes, and rather less traffic than today's crowded world.
The journey south may have been slower but was so much more relaxed |

Sheila's
birthday 1973: by this time of the year, many camp sites were already
closed. We therefore had to 'wild camp' in the forests of Les Landes south
of Bordeaux. This small ridge tent served us well for several years |

Hillman
Imp: our first car may only have been small, but it gave us sterling
service. Here it is parked on a high mountain road somewhere in the French
Pyrenees. Notice Paul's hair length, fashionably unkempt in the spirit of
the times |
