Mountain
craft: the mountains of the French Pyrenees were startlingly
spectacular, but being late in the season restricted what we could
achieve, especially with the first snows falling while we were there.
Intense cold gave the perfect excuse for rum in morning coffee |

The
glacier below the Breche de Roland: the Spanish border runs along the
crest of the highest mountains; visible from a distance is the enormous
gash of the Breche de Roland. To reach this from Gavarnie, we had to
traverse the steep, permanent snow-field |

The
Cirque de Gavarnie: this spectacular showpiece on the northern side of
the Pyrenees is an enormous natural amphitheatre, scoured out by glacial
action into an almost perfect semi-circle, 1400m high and 900m in diameter |

Lac
de Gaube: high in a steep-sided valley above the town of
Cauterets, the startlingly beautiful Lac de Gaube gives breathtaking views
up to the 3289m high peak of Vignemale |
