The 3 Baltic
Republics of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have enjoyed independence for
only 40 years out of the last millennium; during the bulk of this time, they have been subject to foreign occupation, worst of all from 1945~1990 the
oppressive subjection by the USSR. Now since independent
statehood in 1991 and accession to the EU in 2004, they have achieved an impressive
re-assertion of their distinctive identities and cultures, making them a fascinating travel
venue with a wealth of natural and historical interest and an assuredly
hospitable welcome.
